The best Atlantic City casinos for comps depend on several factors based on your casino playing. For example, what games you play, what limits you play, how often you visit the casino (and how long you play), and other activities you engage in at the casino, such as dining, entertainment, hotel stays, and more, all work together to determine what kinds of offers you may receive from a specific casino rewards program.
In terms of comparing casino comps, it’s important to note that what would be considered the best comps is highly dependent on player preference. Some casinos reward players with rooms, dining credits, or concert tickets, while others focus on promo play or cash giveaways. Once you know what you’re looking for and how much you plan to play, we can get into the nuts and bolts of what kinds of offers you’ll find at all of Atlantic City’s casino resorts.
🥇Top 3 Atlantic City casinos for overall comps
1. Borgata Casino
Borgata awards the highest amount of comp dollars of any AC casino, but it also has the highest volume of players. In addition to being a first-class gaming destination, Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa hands out the most total comps for promo gaming credits, dining, cash giveaways, and non-cash (gift) giveaways.
It is also third (behind Hard Rock and Ocean) in total room comps awarded. Borgata also spreads their comps out across more players than any other Atlantic City casino, so the best or highest comp dollars go to their highest volume (and highest limit) players. But lower volume loyal players can usually get some small comp returns as well.
Borgata is great for VIP rewards. Higher-level tier holders get generous dining credits, resort fees waived, spa credits, and even air travel for members of the top two tiers, Platinum and Noir. Considering Borgata has a world-class poker room, it’s also a solid option for poker players looking to be rewarded for their frequent play.
2. Hard Rock Casino
Behind Borgata, Hard Rock has the second-highest budget for promotional allowances, emphasizing rooms and entertainment. Hard Rock AC hands out the highest number of room comp dollars (across the highest number of players) and awards the most entertainment comps. This property is also second in food comps and promo gaming credits and third in cash giveaways, making Hard Rock one of the most comp-friendly casinos on the Boardwalk.
Still, lower-tier Unity members have to put in high volume to get decent comps, so you will need to climb up into the Legend tier and higher to really reap the benefits of Hard Rock’s generosity. Hard Rock also offers Unity Rewards benefits across 200 establishments worldwide for frequent players who like to travel, especially internationally.
3. Ocean Casino Resort
Ocean Casino Resort is another Atlantic City property that offers generous comps, especially for higher-tier members. It is second in overall promo spend for room comps and cash giveaways and third for promo play, entertainment, and food comps.
Compared to Borgata and Hard Rock, Ocean doesn’t extend their comps to as many players, meaning they reserve most of their player rewards for their highest volume and most loyal customers. If you are a lower volume, lower limit player, you might find getting your hands on free rooms or other higher-tier comps at Ocean is tougher.
Another positive of Ocean Rewards is they are quite flexible, as the comps you earn from gaming can be redeemed at a rate of 1:1 for dining, shopping on property, spa, or hotel stays. A key benefit with Ocean Rewards is same-day free play, which you can earn as you play slots and redeem on the same day.
Note that all same-day free play expires after 90 days for all tier levels. Two downsides of Ocean Rewards: They can only be used at the Ocean AC property (there are no other Ocean Casinos in the country); and comp dollars expire 90 days after you earn them (for Signature tier) and after 180 days (for Preferred cardholders). All Atlantic City casino rewards programs
🥈Average AC casino comps
After a fairly steep dropoff from the three top-comping casinos are Caesars properties and Bally’s.
Caesars Rewards
Caesars Rewards brings some solid value for players who frequent Caesars Casino, Harrah’s Resort, and/or Tropicana in Atlantic City. Because all three casinos are linked into the same rewards program, it’s nice that you can earn tier credits and comps for play at all of the casinos. It’s also great news for frequent travelers as you can earn and redeem Caesars Rewards credits at any of more than 50 Caesars Entertainment properties across the U.S.
Caesars is also one of the best for comp specials like 20X Next Day Free Slot Play, where slot play on specific days scores you multiplied promo play the following day. They also often have jackpot drawings where jackpot winners earn entries for a share of cash giveaways.
For anyone interested in signing up to play online casino games, Caesars Palace Online Casino offers new players a generous tier credit bonus of 250,000 credits in exchange for playing through $25 on the app. You can also earn tier credits for Caesars Rewards through online play, which can help you move up in status and earn comps for Caesars brick-and-mortar casinos even faster.
Harrah’s is also one of the easiest casinos for earning free rooms, so frequent Caesars property players can usually access Harrah’s room offers, especially during weekdays. Of the four, Tropicana has the lowest overall comp dollars awarded, but loyal players will still find plenty of rewards there.
Bally’s Casino
In addition to Harrah’s, Bally’s is known as the other Atlantic City property where it is fairly easy to earn room comps or discounts. While it doesn’t have sister properties in AC, Bally’s does have 15+ gaming properties across the U.S. that all link into the same player rewards program.
🥉Below average AC casino comps
Resorts and Golden Nugget each have their unique charms and still reward loyal customers despite handing out the lowest overall comps in terms of promo dollars.
Resorts Casino
Resorts is the second lowest for comps in Atlantic City, but it still gives out a healthy amount of promo gaming credits, with frequent players reaping the most free play. Resorts are known for their nostalgic charm and for offering a quieter, more traditional casino experience than modern casinos like Hard Rock and Ocean. It also offers lower-limit gaming and affordable rooms and amenities, which helps make up for lower comps for rooms and dining.
Golden Nugget Casino
Golden Nugget gives out the lowest overall comp dollars and is on the low end or middle of the road for most promotional categories. That said, Golden Nugget is actually second only to Borgata in gift giveaways and rewards its highest-volume players with generous promo play comps (Golden Nugget has the highest average gaming comp amount per recipient).
Golden Nugget also offers flexible comps at 1:1 for spa, dining credit, and free play, which is nice. This casino has some of the best restaurants and amenities to use your comps on, including modern hotel rooms that overlook the marina for a quieter setting away from the Boardwalk crowds. Comps earned through the 24K Select Club can also be used at any of Golden Nugget’s other six properties nationwide and at 600+ Landry’s, Inc. restaurants, a unique perk travelers and foodies can appreciate.
Both of these casinos generally distribute the comp dollars they offer to fewer patrons, allowing them to focus their promo spend on their most loyal players. A prime example of this approach can be seen in Golden Nugget’s and Resorts’ cash giveaways, where they hand out some of the highest average cash bonuses but to relatively few players.
An important factor to be aware of before climbing the tiers of any reward program is tier matching. This refers to the practice of some (not all) casinos to honor your comparable tier level at another Atlantic City casino rewards program, without having to go through the trouble (and dollars) to earn the status again.
For example, if you have reached the highest status at Resorts Casino, you can present your Red Carpet card at Hard Rock AC and possibly be awarded Hard Rock’s top-tier X card status, which will automatically make you eligible for the highest comp rewards at that property. Be sure to check the fine print on player rewards programs to see which casinos will honor your tier status to take maximum advantage of this valuable benefit.
Promotional play and average player allowance chart
Every casino is different regarding promotional allowances, priorities for player comps, and methods for calculating player rewards. Understanding which casinos are most generous for the types of comps you are most interested in is crucial for determining what loyalty rewards programs will work best for you.
Overall comp amounts and number of recipients are based on reported promotional allowance totals for Q1-Q3 2024 (Jan.-Sept., 2024) published by the New Jersey Gaming Division Enforcement. Average comp amounts are per recipient per quarter (3 months).

Keep in mind for all of these comparisons that these are merely averages per recipient, and higher volume players (and those betting higher limits) are going to receive comps well above those numbers for casinos they play at frequently.
Seasonality is also an important factor to note when it comes to comps and offers at Atlantic City casinos. While all the above data represents quarterly averages, far more comps are awarded during the summer months leading into the fall (July-September). Those are peak months for visitors to Atlantic City, and casinos respond accordingly by encouraging loyal play at their respective gaming establishments to compete for your business. That is great news for you as a player.
If you’re interested in free or reduced-price AC rooms, Ocean Resort and Borgata offer the most generous promotional allowances, with Bally’s and Tropicana coming in a distant third and fourth. Harrah’s is also known for rewarding decent volume play with room comps.
More on tips for scoring room comps below, but in general, room comps are much easier to get for non-peak nights (Sunday-Thursday) and when you book further in advance. Casinos block off a certain number of rooms for promotional purposes, so once they fill up, it will be much harder to snag a free room.
Borgata and Hard Rock give out the most in overall dining credits and entertainment comps like concert or show tickets. Borgata, Hard Rock, and Ocean are tops for overall promo play awarded, but Golden Nugget (followed by Hard Rock) actually awards the highest average gaming comp amount per recipient. Basically, Golden Nugget opts to reward fewer players but with higher free play amounts, on average.
AC casinos also vary drastically in their approaches to cash giveaways. Borgata, Ocean, Hard Rock, and Caesars give away the most cold hard cash through special drawings, but most of them (with the exception of Hard Rock) spread them out across a high number of players so the average prize is between $8-$12. Hard Rock’s average cash giveaway, by contrast, is $620.
Some other properties, including Bally’s, Resorts, and Golden Nugget, hand out a relatively low amount of cash through drawings, but they concentrate it on so few customers that each winner gets four-figures on average. Bally’s actually awards the highest average on cash drawings at around $3,000 per recipient.
The best part about player rewards and casino comps in Atlantic City (and elsewhere) is that they are totally free to join. Most loyalty programs also allow you to hit the ground running and start earning comps immediately with your play. If you’re lucky, some casinos will even gift you a branded lanyard to use with your newly minted player’s card or another gift like a t-shirt or hat.
Most Atlantic City casinos offer promo play and/or comp dollars at $1 per $5 in slot play. The lowest free play comp that casinos typically award is $5, meaning once you play through $25 on slots, you could earn a comp.
Note that while at most casinos, you must wait until your next visit to cash in comp dollars you earn for free play or other rewards, some casinos, like Ocean and Golden Nugget, offer ” same-day free play,” so you can access your free play comps the same day you earn them.
Comp rates for table gameplay are much more complex to calculate as it is based on a combination of factors including your average bet, number of hands (per hour), and house edge of the game you’re playing. These factors contribute to a player’s theoretical hourly loss, and casinos typically comp between 15%-20% of that number.
In this model, games with a lower house edge, like blackjack, craps, and Pai Gow Poker, have lower comp rates than, say, roulette and Three Card Poker. So, typically, players who put in decent volume on slots and games like roulette or Three Card Poker will earn comps faster than those who mostly play blackjack or other table games.
How to get free rooms in Atlantic City
Getting your hands on room comps in Atlantic City is still possible, but you can help your chances with loyal, higher volume play and knowing the ins and outs of the different casino rewards programs. That’s where we come in.
Before getting into comparing room comps across the casinos, there are some important general tips to follow to maximize your chances of getting free rooms (and other comps) in Atlantic City. Tips for maximizing casino comps:
-
Always use your player’s card
When gaming, especially at higher house edge games, be sure to use your player’s card so you can get rated and get credit for your play. An important exception would be if you typically play medium to high limits at slots and table games, it could be better to not use your card when you play a lower-rated game like poker, as it could bring down your comp rating average. If you only or mostly play poker, then swiping in when you play is perfectly fine and recommended. -
Play higher house edge games (at least sometimes)
In exchange for the higher edge for the casino, you should get better comps when playing slots and table games like roulette and Three Card Poker. -
Play higher limits
While it’s most critical that you stay within your limits and financial means when gambling, just be aware that higher average bets typically earn higher comps and tier credits. Even so, your average bet is only one of many factors that go into complex calculations for determining comps for each player. -
Focus on one player rewards program at a time
The more volume you put in with one rewards program or casino, the higher you will be able to climb in their tier system. If you spread your play around too much, you might find it difficult to raise above the first or second tier level in any program, which isn’t ideal. -
Don’t let comps expire
Pay attention to terms associated with comp dollars and tier credits so you don’t let any promo credits expire before you use them. -
Take advantage of tier matching
If you are able to rise to the top or second tier of a specific casino rewards program, be sure to take advantage of tier matching offers at other casinos to reap VIP benefits at other properties as well. You will be leaving a lot of value on the table if you don’t! -
Non-peak times
To improve your chances of getting free rooms, plan overnight stays during the week (Sunday-Thursday nights), during non-peak seasons, and check for room comps well in advance. Also, if you receive a free room offer by mail or email, your chances of getting the day and/or room of your preference will be higher the sooner you call to book the offer. Casinos set aside a fixed number of comped rooms, and they often fill up.
If you’re simply looking for casinos where you can earn comped rooms the easiest or fastest, we recommend you check out Harrah’s or Bally’s, with Tropicana being a close third place. All three of these casinos are among the most economical regarding standard room costs, which is one reason it is easier to earn free rooms at these casinos.
Of the three, Harrah’s hands out the most room comp dollars to a higher number of players. That brings the average room comp down, but it also means players putting in decent volume are able to get weekday comps and weekend room discounts often, and even some free weekend nights during non-peak seasons.
Also, because Harrah’s, Tropicana, and Caesars feed into Caesars Rewards, it is one of the best player rewards systems for earning room comps. Your play at one of the three casinos can get you discounted rooms and sometimes even comped nights at the others, but Caesars is the toughest of the three when earning free rooms.
In the following table, we break down some key differences between Atlantic City casino hotel prices, room comp allowances, and quality, with additional highlights below.

The top-three rated Atlantic City casino hotels—Ocean, Hard Rock, and Borgata—offer the highest dollar value in room comps, but that doesn’t tell the whole story.
Borgata Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City is generous with room comp dollars. Still, because of the popularity of the world-class casino and the top-notch hotel ratings, the competition for those room comps is tough. Visitors who play relatively high volumes on slots and/or table games at Borgata Atlantic City can generally get one or more weekday room comps and sometimes free or reduced weekend night rates, especially in non-peak seasons or if you book well in advance.
Hard Rock Atlantic City gives out room comps to more players than any other casino, but the comp value per recipient is one of the lowest. Players at Hard Rock are more likely to receive reduced room rates or non-peak weekday room offers for their loyal play. However, the highest volume (and higher limit) players should be able to get even weekend room comps with enough notice, especially if they have a VIP host to help them arrange free stays.
Another casino hotel with excellent ratings, Ocean Casino Resort, typically offers the most expensive rooms, but it also hands out the highest average room comps.
The Ocean Rewards comp system heavily favors higher tiers and VIPs, so mid-tier Preferred cardholders (3,000-19,999 tier points) are more likely to receive discounted room rates and limited weekday room comps, while Prime and Reserve (VIPs) get the majority of the room comps available for weekends.
Meanwhile, the lowest tier Ocean Rewards cardholders (Signature) are not eligible for complimentary or discounted rooms until they earn 3,000 tier points to reach the Preferred level. For players who earn free rooms at Ocean, you’ll be happy to learn that resort fees are waived for comped rooms (but not on reduced-rate rooms).
Golden Nugget Atlantic City typically offers the lowest room rates of any AC hotel, but it also gives out the fewest room comps and the lowest total amount of room comp dollars. Even so, Golden Nugget rooms offer solid value based on high ratings (and views of the marina) for the money. Also, Golden Nugget Atlantic City makes up for its tight room comps with some of the highest (per recipient) comp amounts for promo gaming credits and cash gifts.
Resorts is another Atlantic City casino offering high value on rooms based on quality and cost, but is notoriously stingy with its room comps. Resorts awards the second-lowest amount of total room comps, beating only the Golden Nugget. Still, loyal Resorts players who put in higher volumes are able to get weekday room comps fairly easily, with most weekend room comps reserved for Paramount Plus and Red Carpet Star Card holders. Red Carpet members also enjoy the perk of no taxes or resort fees with room comps, making them all the more valuable.
Types of comps available
Tier benefits are important to review for any rewards program before signing up, but more importantly, it is important to decide what casino(s) will get your business. Casino rewards programs will list the benefits for each tier, with promo play generally appearing in all tiers. Note that your promo play offers will depend on your play, not your tier level.
With so much competition in a compact area, Atlantic City’s nine casinos invest heavily in promotional spend to promote loyalty and repeat business. As such, every Atlantic City casino rewards casino-goers with a wide range of comps, each excelling in different areas. Among the types of comps you will typically find available, based on your play, include:
Free or reduced hotel room rates based on play, with weekend nights (Friday and Saturday) being much more difficult to earn.
Comps specifically designated for dining at a restaurant or cafe at the property, usually for a set amount that will be deducted from your bill. Many casinos also allow players to cash in comp dollars for food at a rate of $1 per 1 comp dollar.
Depending on your play and preferred games, these can come in the form of slot credits or free table bets.

Atlantic City casinos FAQ
The answer varies widely across Atlantic City casinos and on a number of other factors, but typically, you will need to put in relatively high volume of play at slots, table games or both in order to get a comped room on a weekday (Sunday-Thursday). On the low end, at casinos like Harrah’s and Bally’s that hand out room comps the quickest, you may need to play three or more hours during non-peak seasons, at around $3+ per spin on slots or $25+ per hand in table games to get a free weekday room comped.
Casinos in Atlantic City are much more likely to award room comps midweek and especially during non-peak times of the year. However, you will still need to play for at least three hours at moderate limits (or more, depending on the casino, your game choice, and your minimum bet) to earn room comps at most AC casinos.
Overall, Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa is the most generous with player comps in terms of overall promotional allowances, but the best comps are reserved for higher volume customers playing at moderate to high limits.
Yes, drinks are still free at Atlantic City casinos, but some casinos are better and faster than others when it comes to cocktail service.
